William Alec Newman

William Alec Newman of San Manuel has received another honor from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

On Sept. 18, 2018, Alec was awarded the BSA Sea Scout Quartermaster Award. This is the Sea Scouts highest award. Alec is a member of BSA Sea Scout Ship 822 of the Catalina Council. This makes Alec the first scout in the Catalina Council to have earned his Eagle, Summit and Quartermaster Award. This is an outstanding accomplishment and a milestone in Alec’s life.

The Sea Scouts program was started in 1912 by the Boy Scouts of America. It teaches leadership, teamwork, selfless service and nautical skills. Boys and girls ages 14 – 20 are eligible to join.

Alec did his training at a number of lakes up north including Roosevelt, Willow Springs, and Patagonia. He learned boating skills, operating motorboats and paddle craft such as kayaks and canoes. Alec said that the program was pretty good and provided him with a lot of knowledge.

He is 21 years old and is attending Pima Community College where he is studying mechanical engineering.

  Congratulations, Alec!
