The Miner Swimmers traveled to the Fort Lowell Pool to compete with swim teams from The Gregory School, St. Augustine, and Morenci.  The Miner Boys Team won with 64 points, Morenci 23, St. Augustine 19 and The Gregory School 4.  The Miner Girls won with 64 points, The Gregory School 25, Morenci 25, and St. Augustine 8.

Several of the fastest swimmers in Division III were at the meet making it very tough to win any individual events.  Evan Apuron (IM, Back) and Jayden Smith (Fly, Breast) were the only Miners to win both their individual events.  Michael Primero-Predgo had a great finishing sprint in the 50 Free to win by the smallest of margins.  Rianna Estrada battled through the 200 Individual Medley in a race that had at least 5 lead changes to finish strong and win.  Darien Apuron was easily the best in the 100 Butterfly.

It was the relays that won the meet for the Miners.  In fact, the Miners won every relay contested at the meet.  Relays are weighted double in the scoring, so winning relays was crucial to winning the meet.  For the boys, Hunter Hill, Daniel Garcia, Evan Apuron, Jayden Smith and Michael Primero-Predgo were on winning relays.  For the Girls, Alyssa Riekofski, Star Chavez, Rianna Estrada, BaiLee Hill, Bonnie Bridges, Darien Apuron, and Jasmine Smith were on winning relays at the meet.

Head Coach Alex Gort was happy with the results.

“You have got to find a way to win the relays it you want to win the meet,” he told the Miner.  “The Miners did and it was a great team win during Homecoming Week!”

The Boys Record advanced to 8-2 and the Girls Record advanced to 7-4.

The Miners will compete at the CDO Invite at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center on Saturday Oct. 13.  The meet will provide swimmers an opportunity to qualify for the State Championship Meet in November.
