Eleven years ago, Rosemary Quiroz opened Rose’s Roses Flowers, Gifts and Printing. She had started out working from her home designing and printing custom announcements and invitations. Her cottage business was starting to “take over her house”, she explained. Lupita Ybarra was selling her flower and gift shop which was located on Main St. next to the Senior Center. Rose, decided to expand her business and purchased the flower and gift shop business from Lupita.
Rose’s Roses has been a fixture on Main Street for many years, operating in several locations until just two years ago Rose and her husband Argel purchased the “Copper Gecko & Gecko Decko” from the late Sonny Samson and Leslie Martin.
“They wanted to sell the property to someone local, they have been the kindest and most supportive people,” Rose explained.
Expanding her business to include consignment and booth rentals in the store has allowed new variety to come into her business. From one of a kind re-purposed furniture from the “Quirky Quail”, high end costume and stamped sterling silver jewelry, custom metal decor by “Ramirez Metal Design”, local artist Laura Lira has one of a kind Copper jewelry designs and custom lamps. These are just a few of the vendors in the store there are many other unique vendors and gifts that fill the store.
You can also order flowers for any occasion, birthdays, holidays, just because, sympathy and wedding flowers can all be custom designed and ordered with Rose. Rose credits her floral designing techniques to Armando Gonzales who taught her many of his skills. “He would come and visit me when he was at the Senior Center, I still use many of the tricks he taught me today” she said. Rose can also provide event planning services. She can help with funeral coordination for those having memorials without the a mortuary or help to support plans made through the funeral homes.
Expanding her business into the Copper Gecko, included the addition of a deck for public and private events along with a short term stay apartment. The Gecko Decko is available for rent for private parties and can be rented with full decorating and party planning services or you can rent and provide the decorations and customize your party as you wish. The deck can accommodate up to eighty five guests.
The one bedroom apartment located in the back of the store features a private driveway in the rear of the store, full bathroom and kitchen. The apartment can be rented for a minimum of one night and a maximum of six nights. To rent the apartment, contact Rose directly.
Rose credits the success of her business to the support of her family and her faith.
“I prayed a lot before I made the big move. When I talked to my dad, he said ‘go for it,’” she said. Her husband Argel and her children are always by her side, from maintenance on the building to helping with the events and big floral orders her family is always there for her.
Her business advice to fellow entrepreneurs and future business owners? “Follow your heart, have faith and pray that combined with a solid plan will help your though the good times and tough times,” she said.
