Pete Madrid

  Pete Madrid, 96, passed away at Oro Valley Hospital on Dec. 28, 2017.

  He leaves behind sons, David C. (Wendy) Madrid and Steve Madrid; brothers, George (Cecilia) Madrid and Frank Madrid; sisters, Nellie Cuestas and Lilly Moreno; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

  Mr. Madrid served in the US Army during WWII, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He became a U.S. citizen at Camp Walters, Texas on jan. 20, 1945 before going to war. He led a platoon of men in battle against the Japanese.  He was decorated with the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return, he married Mary Lou Canez and the couple had three children.

  He was a contract miner, Lamp Repairman for Magma Copper Co.  He worked at the Tiger mine and later at the San Manuel minesite.  Pete retired at the age of 62.

  Mr. Madrid loved to dance, hunt, fish and ride horses.  He was active in the local parades and helped with fiestas at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, and was a member of the VFW and Lion’s Club.

  He loved to travel, visiting Hawaii, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Mexico during his retirement.

  Services for Mr. Madrid will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Mammoth. Visitation will be at 9 a.m., Rosary at 10 a.m., visitation at 10:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth. A reception will be held following graveside services at the Blessed Sacrament Church Hall.
