Rosa C. Martinez “Rosie,” a lifetime resident of Superior has been the Superior Head Start’s Representative for the Head Start Policy Council (PC) of Pinal Gila Community Child Services-Head Start for the past three years. She was also elected as treasurer for PC for those three years. Rosie has met the maximum number of PC membership years serving Head Start.
The Head Start Policy Council is one of the governing boards of the Head Start Preschool Program and is made up of mostly parents who are involved in the program and have a key role in setting Head Start program policies.
Rosa was also a member of Head Start’s Health Advisory Committee. She is the only parent of Superior to attend the Health Advisory Committee meetings and has traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend the National Head Start Association Conference. She attended workshops aimed at increasing parent involvement in their child’s school life, literacy and improving school readiness skills.
Rosa’s sister, Marian M. Koliacos was also a firm believer in education. While Marian lived in California, she was instrumental in establishing Head Start Programs where she assisted in the Legislation that exists today nationwide.
Marian and Rosa are daughters of Manuel and Josefina Martinez. Rosa’s parents and sister have passed away. Rosa has two sons, Jesus and Manuel “Bebe” Huerta and four grandchildren, Guillermo, Manuel III, Brando and Fina, all four of whom have attended Superior Head Start Preschool. Rosa also has two nieces, Ramona and Vangie Koliacos. Rosa was very proud of her sister and honored her parents.
In honor of Head Start month, the Superior Head Start will be hosting a community open house from starting at 8:00am on Thursday, October 24, 2013. Community members are encouraged to drop by and visit the Head Start classroom.
