Looking to build on the momentum of last week’s first victory, the Panthers’ football team was unable to do so and lost in overtime to Duncan last Friday night, 28 – 22.
After a scoreless first quarter, freshman quarterback Nicolaus Cruz put the Panthers ahead on a 30-yard touchdown run with about four minutes left in the half. Cruz completed the 2-point conversion for an 8 – 0 lead.
Duncan answered with less than minute left in the half on an 18-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion was successful to tie the game at the half, 8 – 8.
Cruz put the Panthers ahead in the third quarter on a 3-yard run. After a successful 2-point conversion, the Panthers led 14 -8 heading into the fourth quarter.
Duncan scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and held a 22 – 16 lead with under a minute to play in the game. Superior’s Eric Oatis scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 22 – 22. Unfortunately the 2-point conversion attempt failed and the game headed to overtime.
After Superior failed to score on their opening possession of overtime, Duncan capitalized and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to earn the victory.
Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Ray to battle the sixth-ranked Bearcats who are coming off their first loss of the season. The annual Copper Helmet game is Friday, October 11, 2013. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
