Panthers decimated by injuries; lose to Roughriders
By Andrew Luberda
The Panthers’ football team has seen its season severely affected by injuries. The Panthers have limited depth and many younger players on their roster. In addition to missing key players at important positions, there is the underlying factor of having to play the remaining healthy players out of position.
With five starters out of the lineup versus Pima last Friday night the Panthers lost to the second-ranked Roughriders, 68 – 8.
Without starting quarterback Nicolaus Cruz the Panthers looked to Matthew Zavala to fill the void. Zavala, normally a wide receiver, finished 10-34, 68 yards, and 2 INT. Freshman running back Edgar Galindo missed his second straight game with an injury. Marcus Hiracheta replaced Galindo and scored the Panthers lone touchdown. Hiracheta, a junior, finished the game with 123 yards on 16 carries and 1 TD. He also had four receptions for 16 yards. Eric Oatis was the leading receiver for the Panthers with five receptions for 45 yards.
The Panthers next game is at Hayden on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. Game time is 7 p.m.
