What does Oktoberfest mean to you? In Kearny it is a 2-day street fair, car show, fun for kids, and a hot dog eating contest. The street fair opens at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 on Alden Street and ends Saturday, Oct. 5 after the winners of the car show and hot dog eating contest are announced.
Enjoy the Magees fry bread, funnel cakes and curly fries; the Knights brats, hotdogs and hamburgers and CAC Aravaipa grilled corn with all the trimmings. Those who want to have a booth other than food have till Sept 25 to submit an application. The local merchants will have side walk sales in front of their businesses with those across the tracks displaying uptown.
T-shirt pre-sales have begun and the chamber will accept t-shirt ads until Sept. 20 when the order is submitted to the printer. Car show participants must register by Sept. 20 in order to get a free t-shirt.
For the children there will be free train rides on the Good Shepherd Express. With the purchase of a $5 bracelet, children can play on their choice of inflatables, participate in song and dance games and crafts. There will be games in ACE Hardware and Event Wizard will return with an array of games.
Ray high plays Pima and after the football game a movie will be shown on Alden Street. Look for the name of the movie in the next week or two.
A Blast From the Past Car Show begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. There will be raffles all day long. There are locals who love to display their vintage pride and joy. As soon as the car show winners are announced the hot dog eating contest will begin. It is not who can eat the most but the number eaten in a specified time period.
Alden Street will be closed from the crosswalk at Bank of the West to the crosswalk by ACE at 6 a.m. Friday through Saturday, and Bank of the West to ARC and former MVD office Saturday until 6:30 p.m.
This closure also affects the food bank parking on Friday, Oct 4.
Volunteers are needed to help with children’s crafts which include pompons and beads.
