Miner swimmers traveled to Canyon State Academy in Queen Creek last Tuesday to compete in a four team swim meet against Poston Butte High School, Mesa Preparatory Academy and Canyon State Academy. The Miner Girls team found themselves on the short end of close three way meet with the final scores of: Poston Butte 94, Mesa Prep 91, and San Manuel 89 (Canyon State Academy is a boys only school). The Miner Boys won the meet by a significant margin: San Manuel 117, Canyon State 74, Poston Butte 70, and Mesa Prep 32.
Individual wins were tough to earn for the Miners. Senior John Bribiescas got the first win for the day in Boys 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:17.31. It wasn’t until the final individual event of the meet, the 100 Breaststroke, that Senior Cierra Austin got the only other individual win with a time of 1:25.64.
Relay wins were also tough. The Girls 200 Freestyle relay team of Amara Apuron, Cierra Austin, Jazelle Sanchez and Nicole Primero won with a time of 2:03.97. The Boys 400 Freestyle relay team of John Bribiescas, Colbey Stratton, Taylor Woods, and Colten Smith won with a time of 4:06.51.
Team depth was the key to the win for the boys. Many second, third and fourth place finishes helped earn the points needed to win the meet.
Head Coach Alex Gort praised the team depth. “There are several swimmers that are working hard and earning points for the team that I expect will be winning races in the future,” said Coach Gort.
Miner swimmers will compete in a meet against Florence and Combs at the Merrill Ranch Pool in Florence on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
