Miner swimmers traveled to Nozomi Aquatic Center in Chandler on Friday, Sept. 13 for the Knight Invitation Swim Meet. All swim teams from high schools 2A and smaller were invited to the meet. Miner girls finished fourth overall with 286 points, and Miner boys finished second overall with 283 points. Medals were awarded for top three finishers in each event and nine Miner swimmers returned home with at least one medal.
Seniors John Bribiescas and Amara Apuron both came home with three medals each, including a first place. Bribiescas won the 500 Freestyle with time of 6:17.70 and Apuron won the 200 Individual Medley (IM) with time of 2:39.88, which is a new school record. Apuron finished second in the 500 Freestyle and teamed up with Seniors Nicole Primero, Cierra Austin and Megan Garcia to finish second in 400 Freestyle Relay. Bribiescas finished third in the 200 Freestyle and joined teammates Colten Smith (Senior), Taylor Woods (Sophomore), and Colbey Stratton (Freshman) to finish second in the 400 Freestyle relay with a new school record time of 4:03.47.
In addition to the medals from the relay teams, Nicole Primero finished third in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:20.19, Cierra Austin finished second in the 100 yard Freestyle with a time of 1:05.83, and Taylor Woods finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:48.79. Sophomore Armando Noriga finished second in the breaststroke with a time of 1:21.03.
Head Coach Alex Gort was impressed with boys 400 Freestyle Relay. “The boys relay beat the old school record by eight-seconds with everyone swimming great splits,” he said.
Miner swimmers will host a meet on Sept. 24 against Florence High School and Arizona College Prep (Chandler) at the San Manuel pool at 4 p.m.
