The San Manuel High School will look to cause some waves in the upcoming season with second year Head Coach Alex Gort at the helm. The Miners are hoping to better last year’s records as the Boys finished 9 – 3 overall, and the Girls finished 9 – 2 overall.
San Manuel participated in 1A-3A Championship Meet last season with the Boys’ team finishing in 12th place overall and the Girls team finished in ninth place overall. Some individual accomplishments for the season were: Wayne Newman became the Champion in 100 Breaststroke at 1A-3A Championship Meet for the second consecutive year.
The Miners lost two starters from the boys’ team and lost two starters from the girls’ team but will return a group of swimmers ready to dive right in. They are Seniors: John Bribiescas – Distance Freestyle and Individual Medley; Amara Apuron – Distance Freestyle and Individual Medley; Cierra Austin – Sprint Freestyle and Breaststroke; Nicole Primero – Sprint Freestyle and Backstroke; Megan Garcia – Distance Freestyle and Backstroke; Juniors: Jazelle Sanchez – Butterfly and Sprint Freestyle; Fernanda Vasquez – Freestyle and Backstroke; Sophomores: Taylor Woods – Individual Medley and Freestyle; and Alec Newman – Freestyle and Breaststroke.
Top Returning Boys are John Bribiescas – Distance Freestyle and Individual Medley; Taylor Woods – Individual Medley and Freestyle; and Alec Newman – Freestyle and Breaststroke.

Swim Team members also looking to cause some waves are Sophomores: Mariela Canisales – Freestyle and Individual Medley and Angela Navarro – Sprint Freestyle and Backstroke.
“Miner swimming has a strong group of returning swimmers,” said Coach Gort. “As Miner swimming enters its fourth year in existence there is a strong group of Seniors leading the way. Megan Garcia, Amara Apuron, Cierra Austin, Nicole Primero, and John Bribiescas all are entering the fourth year of high school swimming and their experience provides a solid base for the team. New additions like Colbey Stratton, Michael Garcia, Angela Navarro, and Mariela Canisales, as well as the offseason improvement by Taylor Woods, Alec Newman, Jazelle Sanchez and Fernanda Vasquez look to make the team good enough to win many meets this season.”
Gort continued, “For the first time in San Manuel High School history, we have swimmers that have been competing at the high school level in swimming for all four years of High School, I think they will show us something special. Both the Boys and Girls Team have the potential to be the best Swim Teams San Manuel High School has ever fielded.”
The Miners will get the season started on Sept. 5 as the will host a swim meet against Valley Christian, Phoenix Christian, and Imagine Prep with action slated for 4 p.m.
