Two costly mistakes early in the first quarter coupled with poor tackling techniques put the Lobo football team in catch up mode against a good defensive team and a very good quarterback on offense.
Things looked bad for the Lobos on their first offensive series. They could not move the ball on the ground going to the passing game on third down only to have the pass attempt intercepted. The Ray team behind the scrambling of their quarterback coupled with the poor tackling Lobos soon were in scoring position punching the football over the goal line at 6:44 of the opening quarter and scored the points after for a 0 to 8 lead. It did not take long for Ray to score again holding the Lobo offense forcing a punt. On the punt attempt, the snap sailed over the punters head finally recovered at the Lobo nine yard line. Ray’s quarterback took it over the goal line untouched, scored the two points to give them a 0 to 16 lead at 4:59 of the first quarter. The Lobos did not give up, they kept fighting back running out of downs giving the football back ad time ran out on the first quarter.
The second quarter started with Ray driving down to the Lobo 15 yard line scoring on the play, added the two points to take a 0 to 24 lead at 10:54 of the second quarter. The two teams traded punts on their next series of plays before Hayden’s Aaron Lagunas put the Lobos on the board with a 24 yard run for a touchdown, scored the two points to cut the Ray lead to 8 to 24 at 6:45 of the second quarter. The Ray offense controlled the rest of the half taking the kick-off at the 41 yard line driving down the field scoring with 47 left to take an 8 to 32 lead as the half came to an end.
The third quarter was what many people expected in the game, with each defense team taking turns stopping the opponent’s offense. Neither team scored but Ray had a drive going late in the third quarter finally scoring early in the fourth quarter on an eight yard run to increase the lead to 8 to 40 lead at 11:56 of the quarter.
The Lobos took the kick off, could not move the chains and punted. It took Ray four plays to score their final touchdowns, a 13 yard run and the two points gave them a 8 to 48 lead at 8:17 of the fourth. The Lobos did not give up. They took the kick off, started to drive only to lose the ball on a pass interception. The Lobo defense held, taking over on downs. On the third Lobo offensive play, Lagunas took the football on a reverse play fifty yards for a TD. They misses on the P.A.T. for a 14 to 48 score at the 2:24 of the fourth. The Lobos kick-off, forced a punt only to lose the ball on a fumble. Ray took a knee as the game clock showed 0:00 winning 14 to 48.
The Lobos now have to regroup and get ready for their homecoming game this week when the Panthers of Superior High School come to Robert P. Lorona field at Lalo Serrano Stadium. Before the game, starting at about 4:00 p.m. the Lobos will have their homecoming parade and a tailgate party in the parking lot of the high school following. All sorts of Lobo items will be on sale with selling of hamburgers and sodas. The game should be a good one, come out and support this courageous group of Lobos as they attempt to get back on the winning column.
