The Kearny Elks Lodge hosted the local competition for the fortieth annual Hoop Shoot Contest Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Ray Jr. High gym

Winners included in the 8-9 year old division were boys Ashton Solis, first place and Andrew Waddell, second place and girls Olivia Romero, first place and Lyana Romero.

In the 10-11 division, boys Alex Bravo, first place and Derek Figueroa, second place and girls Myranda Figueroa, first place and Brianna Goad, second place, came away winners.

The 12-13 year old winners were boys Emmett Sims, first place and Guillermo Ortega, second place and girls Iiana Goad, first place, and Leticia Vargas, second place.

Each first and second place winner received a basketball and plaque. Third place participants also received a plaque.

The first place winners will compete in the District contest to be held at the Leo Kornegay Jr. High School in Miami Saturday, Jan. 5 starting at 9 a.m.

The Kearny Elks would like to thank Ray Jr. High Principal Curt Cook for all the work he did setting up the gym prior to the shoot. The club would also like to acknowledge the Hayden-Winkelman and Ray Schools for helping with the Elks Hoop year annually. LeRoy “Bugs” Lewis is the Hoop Shoot Chairman for the lodge.

A special thanks goes out to the parents, without their support these children would to have the opportunity to participate in the annual event.
