Did you know that one in five children is at risk of hunger in America while one in five Arizonans live in poverty. Every county in America has food insecurity. These are just a few of the somber facts that motivated the SHS DECA club to host the first ever Fill a Bowl event in Superior.
The Superior Junior Senior High quickly filled up on Saturday evening with dozens of residents who were looking to fill their bowls for a good cause. There were four homemade soups to choose from; Posole, Cream of Potato, Chicken Noodle and Minestrone. Salad and bread accompanied the soups. The bowls that were filled were not just your average bowl, the bowls were decorated by community members and students. Each bowl had a somber fact about hunger in America. These facts on hunger are what motivated the DECA members at SHS to host this event.
During the Fill the Bowl event the students announced that after the check was cut they raised additional funds. The student group raised over $1,000 for the Superior Food Bank. Superior Food Bank representative Manny Ruiz thanked the students for their hard work. In his speech he explained that current economic conditions in Superior are increasing their clients at the food bank. Last week the Superior Food Bank provided food boxes that provided enough food for at least three days to their clients. “Currently we are serving 20 percent of Superior’s population,” Ruiz explained.
With the holidays quickly approaching the Superior Food Bank is in great need for both donations of funds and non-perishable food items. If you would like to make a donation to the Superior Food Bank you can contact Manny Ruiz at 520-689-5430 or Dennis VanGorp at 520-827-0988.
