Opinion: The pool is indeed the jewel of San Manuel

Posted June 18, 2013 at 4:47 pm

I would just like to take a moment to say thank you for including the excellent article “The Jewel of San Manuel – the pool,” by Alex Gort, in your May 8, 2013 edition.

Having spent many hours in that very same pool (as well as the old pool and the Mammoth pool), I was thrilled to see an article expounding upon the many benefits of such a wonderful addition to San Manuel all those years ago.

Though I learned how to swim at the old pool, which sadly is a hunk of concrete now, many of my teenage years included time well spent at the new pool.  I must’ve swam a million laps, or so it seemed, during my nine years on the swim team; I

To the Supervisors: No more excuses; public safety should come first

Regarding Paul Babeu’s opinion column “All Pinal residents deserve equal protection and safety”:

We note that the Supervisors approved a $373.7 million tentative budget.

Now, Mr. Rios, there should be enough in that budget for beefing up our Sheriff’s department needs.  After all, what’s more important than our public safety?  Could you be considering politics, and your feud with Paul Babeu over our safety?

    The most distressing thing about

To the sheriff: stop blaming the Board of Supervisors

The Sheriff’s decision to attempt to influence public opinion through his recent editorial instead of his standard procedure of handing out Rico Funded checks, comes as no surprise to those of us paying attention.  Because he was unable to bamboozle the Board of Supervisors (BOS) with an initial request for almost $13 million dollars in budget increases, he returned to the board for 2.7 million. Fortunately, they saw through his facade and did not even offer a motion to move the agenda item to a vote. With the exception of Supervisor Chase, who

Supervisor Rios discusses approved 2013-14 budget

As we hit the hot summer months, the county’s budget process once again takes center stage as we head into the new fiscal year.

Recently the Board of Supervisors adopted the tentative budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.  The tentative budget approved by the supervisors totals $373,723,558.

This budget continues our path to increased fiscal responsibility.  I have always believed that Pinal County should maximize the use of your

Offering another opinion for the SPD-PCSO debate

Regarding a letter from Charles Davidson dated May 18, 2013 entitled “In support of local police”, I would like to offer a different point of view.

All law enforcement put their lives on the line for all of us. That should include the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and the Superior Police department (SPD), and all other law enforcement agencies across the U.S. It’s their jobs; officers are aware of that the first day they apply.

Opinion: All Pinal residents deserve equal protection and safety

Is it fair that families who live within city or town limits receive more than double the police protection?  Almost 212,000 Pinal residents do not live in a city or town and are the primary responsibility of the Sheriff’s Office. We have 209 deputies for 212,000 residents who live in the unincorporated county areas like San Tan Valley, Gold Canyon, Hidden Valley, Queen Valley, Arizona City, San Manuel, Oracle, SaddleBrooke and portions of Casa Grande and Apache Junction.  Local Police Departments have over 540 full time Police Officers to protect 170,000 residents within
