The Ray Bearcats will begin their season a week earlier than most other schools in the state. They will travel to Elfrida, AZ and take on the Valley Union Blue Devils on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013.
Head coach Willie Jordan said it’s been a challenge for the ‘Cats to get their work in during training camp but the team has remained focused. He said the changes in the divisions and schedules have caused the unexpected challenges during camp.
“We’ve been, basically, two weeks behind instead of two weeks ahead,” Jordan said. “We’ve been catching up to make sure we stay competitive.”
With 11 returning players from last year’s team, the ‘Cats have the experience to overcome pre-season obstacles.
After finishing with a 5 – 3 record in 2012, the ‘Cats will look to team captain Dominic Bravo (WR/SS) to provide leadership and direction. Coach Jordan said returning players Destry Yocum (QB/OLB), Julio Noriega (OL/MLB), Rexx Sosa (OL/DL), and Joe Rudy Lorona (QB/FS) will be counted on as the team looks to improve on last season’s record.
Maintaining good health and avoiding serious injuries are always important for any team. The ‘Cats will need at least three more components in order to achieve success this season.
“Mental toughness, physical toughness and endurance,” Coach Jordan answered when asked for the three components.
