TEMPE – Los Diablos, the official Latino Alumni Chapter of the Arizona State University Alumni Association, has released the 2013-2014 application for the Freeport-McMoran Una Promesa Community Scholarship.

The goal of the Latino alumni group is to provide financial assistance and support to outstanding Arizona students who are committed to the Latino community and who choose to attend and graduatefrom ASU. In 2013-2014, Los Diablos will provide scholarships of varying amounts up to the cost of full tuition.

“The Freeport-McMoran Una Promesa Community Los Diablos Scholarship is more than just tuition assistance,” said Lisette Flores, president of the Los Diablos Board of Directors. “It’s a comprehensive program that includes mentoring and networking components aimed at helping build Arizona’s future leaders.”

Through the Puentes (Bridges) program, each scholar is matched with a Los Diablos board member who serves as a mentor for the upcoming academic school year. As mentors, boardmembers actively encourage academic success and expose scholars to potential career paths. They become the scholars’ advocates and liaisons to the university and community at large.

Los Diablos attribute academic accountability from its scholars and the Puentes Program as a reasonwhy Los Diablos Scholars have historically had a higher graduation success rate as well as a higher G.P.A average than the rest of the ASU student population.

The Latino Alumni Chapter’s encourages its scholars to attend, participate, and volunteer in various Los Diablos activities during and in preparation for the academic school year. These events are excellent opportunities to meet and thank the generous donors, network, and develop leadership skills.

All scholars interested in applying for this scholarship must submit their application by Friday, March 01, 2013 and meet the following general requirements: 1. Be a graduate of an Arizona high school or a graduate of an Arizona community college or current ASU student. Arizona law also requires students receiving ASU institutional scholarships such as this one to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. 2. Be admitted to Arizona State University as a full-time undergraduate degree-seeking student. 3. Maintain enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student. 4. Maintain a cumulative, un-weighted G.P.A. of at least 3.0.

5. This scholarship may NOT be combined with other ASU institutional merit scholarships (i.e., the President’s Scholarship, the Maroon & Gold Scholarship, etc.) In the event a student is selected for more than one ASU institutional merit scholarship, the student will be automatically awarded the scholarship with the highest dollar amount only. 6. Dependents of ASU employees who qualify for a tuition subsidy are not eligible.
