Champs! Lady Miners capture the Division IV State Championship

The San Manuel Lady Miners varsity softball team captured the Division IV State Softball Championship by defeating the North West Christian Crusaders 5 – 4 on May 11 at the Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix.

The Lady Miners entered the semi-finals as the #2 seed and first faced off against the #14 seed the Miami Lady Vandals on May 10 in the Semi-Finals and won 3 – 2 in a very close match-up to advance to the finals.

San Manuel had played Miami twice before during the regular season beating the Lady Vandals 5 – 3 and 11 – 5. But this time around the difference was a single run.

    Mt. Vista athletes honored

    On Wednesday May 8, Mountain Vista School held their annual Athletic Banquet. The banquet honored the school’s athletes and coaches. Families of the athletes attended the dinner and watched the presentation of awards.

    This year’s Athletes of the Year were Leticia Garcia and John Mechado. Millie Mercer was also honored for her outstanding performance at the CJHL Championship Track Meet where she won four medals.

    Miners fall to Phoenix Christian in state semi-finals

    The San Manuel Miners varsity baseball team fell 8 – 6 to the Phoenix Christian Cougars, in the Division IV State Semi-Finals on May 10 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

    The Miners had a another surprise run into the state playoffs as they entered the tournament as the no. 18 seed and worked their way into the top four teams of Division IV.

    Former teacher passes torch to track star

    Casey Egan was at the Divisional Track meet in San Manuel earlier this month to congratulate San Manuel High School track star Wayne Newman. Newman is undefeated in the high hurdles this year. He has won every race he has competed in including the Willie Williams Track meet in Tucson.

    Newman brings home three individual titles at state track meet

    The Miner Track team sent six athletes to the state track and field championships to compete on May 10 and 11 at Mesa Community College in Mesa.

    In the 110m Hurdle finals, Wayne Newman blew away the competition with a time of 14.52 defending his 2012 title.

    He again took the 300m Hurdle title with a time of 38.41, he also placed fifth in the high jump

    Eight ‘Cats Qualify for State Track and Field Championships

    Several members from the ‘Cats track and field teams competed at the state championship meet after qualifying at the recent Div. IV Sec. II South Invitational Meet. The Bearcats finished third out of ten teams at the Invitational meet.

    Michael Bejar named coach of the year

    Former Kearny resident Michael Bejar was named the NWCA New Mexico assistant wrestling coach of the year last month in a vote decided by head coaches from across the state of New Mexico.

    “It’s very surprising to me. I had no idea about it. It is sweet and nice at the same time,” Bejar said in an interview with the Farmington Daily News. Bejar is the assistant coach at Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, New Mexico. He also is the head coach of the

    Lady Miners finish regular season with three wins

    The San Manuel Lady Miners softball team finished the regular season with three wins.

    The Lady Miners hosted Miami on Apr. 19 and picked up the win 11 – 5.

    Panthers’ softball falls in ‘most exciting game of their year’

    The Superior Panthers’ softball team played in arguably the most exciting game of the playoffs against Yuma Catholic. After coming from behind to tie the game in the seventh inning, 10 – 10, the Panthers saw Yuma Catholic score one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the victory, 11 – 10. The first-round loss ended the season for the Panthers’ but did nothing to cloud their optimism for next year.
